In last month's newsletter I mentioned that I'd fished a tiny little trout fishery, Hondon Trucha near Alicante at New Year with Gary from www.garysmithfishing.com   Good fun if you happen to be on holiday, but not a fishery that you would travel miles just to fish.  So when Gary was on the phone to me the other week and invited me to fly over again and fish in a competition there, I had to politely decline - I mean travelling all the way to Spain just to fish in a competition in a tiny fishery - that of course would be complete MADNESS.........

.........so anyway I came fourth!

Well the weather here was cold and miserable, and Ryan Air were doing flights for under a tenner each way!  Plus it's always nice to stay at Gary's Luxury Villa - good food, great accommodation and plenty of beer in the fridge - though just a bit cold at this time of year for a dip in the ample swimming pool.

On the way through the baggage lounge at the airport, I grabbed a copy of "Roundtownnews", the local English language newspaper and turned to the fishing column to read the latest reports - and was horrified to find the following:

"Scottish fly fishing master Ron Sharp is flying in for the event and it will be interesting to see his methods and techniques. Ron will join myself Peter Hampshire and Steve Green plus the other regulars to battle it out for honours. If you wish to come along and have a look Jan Keijsers will, as always, welcome you. The event takes place between two and six on the Saturday afternoon."

Oh dear, no pressure then!

....and who writes the fishing column?  Yes Gary Smith - anyway his pressure tactics failed to work as, if I remember rightly, he caught ...........none Ha!
